What Is an Operculectomy

Operculectomy is a minor surgery to remove the flap of gum tissue (operculum) that partly covers a wisdom tooth. This is done to prevent infection and inflammation, especially when the wisdom tooth is erupting or causing problems.

When removing inflamed or hypertrophied tissue around partially erupted or impacted teeth, report excision of pericoronal gingiva (D7971) or operculectomy.
